Skye housebuilder reaches 250-home milestone with sights set on greener future

Kirsty MacKinnon – Managing director of R.house

Skye-based housebuilding partnership R.HOUSE has delivered its 250th home, marking a significant milestone for the company.

The firm has spent more than a decade reimagining how quality housing can be built in some of Scotland’s most challenging rural and island environments.

Founded in 2012 through a collaboration between award-winning Skye architects Rural Design and specialist builders James MacQueen Building Contractors, R.HOUSE was built on a straightforward but ambitious premise: that great homes could be designed, manufactured and delivered at speed, without sacrificing quality or character.

The partnership brings architects and builders together from day one, removing the friction that so often slows rural housebuilding down.

Central to the R.HOUSE approach is a precision-engineered, offsite timber-frame panel system that allows a home to be erected on site in a single day, reducing exposure to the elements and supporting clearer timelines and cost certainty for clients. Every home is individually designed around its site and brief, as the team puts it, they have never built exactly the same house twice.

Managing director Kirsty MacKinnon said the milestone reflects something deeper than output. “Reaching our 250th home is a proud moment. But what matters to us is what sits behind that number. These aren’t ‘units’, they’re homes where people can settle, raise families and build a life.”

Materials are chosen for performance, low maintenance and longevity, and are locally sourced wherever possible. The homes are handmade by experienced craftspeople, with careful attention to detailing suited to the demands of Highland conditions.

R.HOUSE is one of Skye’s largest private employers, and its work extends across island and mainland communities throughout the north of Scotland. As well as private commissions, the partnership has supported social and community-led housing, including Kilbeg – a development of 17 new homes on Skye and the island’s first new village in more than a century.

Looking ahead, R.HOUSE is focused on strengthening its environmental credentials, investing in product development to improve energy efficiency, and expanding its training and apprenticeship programmes.

Kirsty added: “We’ve built our reputation by doing the basics to a high standard. The next chapter for us is about raising the bar — doing what we do well, even better. The goal stays the same: help families put down roots by delivering homes that are built to last in rural and island communities.”
