Social Bite reopens Edinburgh Village with more homes

Homelessness charity Social Bite has reopened its flagship Edinburgh Village, which was first set up by the charity in 2018 in Granton, as reported by The Scotsman and The Herald.

Edinburgh Village was initially established as an alternative option to typical accommodation for the homeless.

The village presented Social Bite’s approach to housing, which promotes the use of modular homes on derelict land in a bid to tackle the housing crisis in a cost-effective way.

The opening has seen the amount of homes increase from 10 to 16, with the village being relocated to a nearby site which has good access to green space.

Last month the charity also opened another village in Rutherglen, in collaboration with South Lanarkshire Council and The Salvation Army, which has delivered homes for 15 individuals.

Josh Littlejohn, the founder of Social bite, said: “The Village model is about more than putting a roof over people’s heads – it’s about building a beautiful, supportive community that restores hope and dignity.

“Our new grant on waterfront Village is a real flagship for this model, and I think it sets an example of how homelessness accommodation can be done differently.”

The village will proceed with being run in collaboration with the homelessness charity Cyrenians, and will have six new pre-built houses - the current 10 houses will undergo a refresh.

The village will house 16 people affected by homelessness – and this could be in the form of using B&Bs, temporary accommodation, sofa surfing, living on the streets, or another form of homelessness.

The six new residents of the village will all get a key to their own fully equipped home, which will have a self-contained kitchenette, bathroom, and living space. The other 10 houses will be used by residents and volunteers that have moved from the previous site.
