Team Scotland is gearing up to return to the Homeless World Cup, aiming to secure a remarkable hat-trick of titles at the event’s 20th anniversary.
Taking place in Oslo, Norway from 23–30 August, the tournament will bring together over 500 players from Homeless World Cup Member Countries for eight days of fast-paced 4-a-side football. More than just a competition, the event harnesses the power of football to build community, boost confidence, and challenge the stigma of homelessness worldwide.
Since its inception, the Homeless World Cup has reached over 1.2 million people through 200 clubs globally. The tournament continues to be a force for social inclusion and change, proving that football can transform lives.
Team Scotland has lifted the trophy twice already – first in 2007 with a commanding 9–3 victory over Poland in Copenhagen, and again in 2011 after a nail-biting 4–3 win against Mexico in Paris.
Leading the squad this year is team manager Derek Ferguson, a former professional footballer and respected media personality. With nearly 500 professional appearances, including six successful seasons at Rangers and two caps for Scotland, Derek brings a wealth of experience and leadership to the team.
Since joining Street Soccer Scotland in March 2025, his commitment to using football as a tool for inclusion and positive change has been central to guiding players who have overcome significant challenges.
Now, Team Scotland is determined to bring the trophy home once again and secure their hat-trick.
David Duke MBE, founder and CEO of Street Soccer, and a former player at the Homeless World Cup, said: “We’re thrilled to be heading back to Oslo for this year’s Homeless World Cup and to offer our players the incredible opportunity to represent their country.
“Having captained Team Scotland in 2004, I’ve witnessed firsthand the powerful impact this tournament can have. Drawing from my own experience of homelessness, it was the tournament – and the coach who became a mentor – that truly ignited the turning point in my life and inspired me to start Street Soccer in 2009.
“At the heart of everything we do, both on and off the pitch, are hope, purpose, and meaningful connections. I’m incredibly proud of the team we’ve assembled and hope the whole nation will get behind this talented group of players.
“This event is about much more than just football; it’s a celebration that unites people from diverse backgrounds, all sharing similar experiences, building connections that go beyond language and borders.
“As the Homeless World Cup marks its 20th edition, it remains an inspiring platform where individuals can come together, discover new possibilities, and take meaningful steps toward positive change.”
HWC team manager, Derek Ferguson, said: “It’s an honour to stand beside this incredible team as we head to the Homeless World Cup. I’m proud of every single player – not just for their talent, but for their resilience, heart, and determination. We’re ready to compete with pride, represent Scotland, and bring the hat-trick of titles home where it belongs.”
