The Big Lunch and The Big Help Out team up for weekend of community action
People across Scotland are invited to take part in a big weekend packed with food, friendship, fun and community action.
The Big Lunch, the UK’s annual celebration for neighbours and local connections, is joining forces with volunteering initiative The Big Help Out and from 5-8 June and people are invited to join in with vouchers and free resources available to help get things started.
Communities across Scotland, from island villages to city streets, are encouraged to share community spirit with thousands expected to eat, meet and lend a hand locally. Whether it’s sharing time with neighbours, improving local spaces or helping good causes, the weekend offers simple ways to make a positive difference.
The campaign, run by charity The Eden Project and supported in Scotland by Pears Foundation and the Co-op invites everyone to get involved in whatever way suits them. That could mean organising a street lunch, hosting a cuppa with neighbours, joining a community litter pick or visiting a local charity to volunteer for the day. From a bite to eat on the street to community-led volunteering opportunities and partnerships with Scottish charities and businesses, there’s something for anyone keen to strengthen local connections.
Grainne McCloskey, Eden Project’s manager in Scotland, said: “With The Big Lunch and The Big Help Out coming together from 5-8 June at the end of Volunteers Week, this year is sure to be overflowing with community spirited action. Whether you’re hanging out or helping out, everyone’s invited! Here in Scotland, to help get things started, through our partnership with Co-op, Eden project are offering £20 shopping vouchers as well as discounts and free resources when people put their community or street plans on the map at thebigdo.com.”
Running annually since 2009, The Big Lunch is the UK’s biggest get together for neighbours and communities, when people come together to share friendship, food and fun on the first weekend in June.
The Big Help Out launched in 2023 to encourage people to try volunteering, lend a hand and make a difference. Millions have taken part so far, with charities offering simple, light touch ways for people to get involved.
Bringing The Big Help Out and The Big Lunch together is made possible by funding from the Pears Foundation and the UK Government, delivered by the Eden Project from 5-8 June. The weekend also forms part of Volunteers’ Week and the Month of Community.
This year, Scotland is invited to join one big DO. For free resources and to find out more visit thebigdo.com.
