Webinar to explore how to turn worker accommodation into lasting homes
A new approach to housing Scotland’s growing energy workforce could help unlock long-term homes for communities while supporting the country’s journey to net zero.
As major energy infrastructure projects accelerate across Scotland, thousands of construction workers are required in areas where housing supply is already constrained and accommodation costs are rising. This growing challenge is prompting fresh thinking across the housing, planning and energy sectors.
A forthcoming industry free-to-attend webinar, hosted by public sector infrastructure body, the Scottish Futures Trust, together with SSEN Transmission, will explore how accommodation needs can be shaped to deliver permanent housing, creating a lasting legacy for local communities while delivering value and additionality for developers and housing providers.
The online session taking place on Wednesday 22 April between 12.30pm and 1.30pm will bring together leading voices from across the sector, including:
- Mary Jarvie, associate director – place, housing & economic investment
- Richard Jennings, housing strategy manager, SSEN Transmission
- Paul Macari, head of planning and economy, Aberdeenshire Council
- Fiona Morrison, deputy chief executive at Hillcrest
Speakers will present a practical model developed by SSEN Transmission, demonstrating how accommodation demand generated by major projects can be leveraged to accelerate the delivery of homes in areas of need.
The webinar will also highlight the role of the Scottish Futures Trust in working to scale and replicate this model across Scotland, helping to turn a short-term delivery pressure for energy companies into a long-term benefit for communities.
Mary Jarvie, associate director – place, housing & economic investment at the Scottish Futures Trust, said: “With Scotland’s net zero ambitions driving unprecedented levels of infrastructure investment, the need for innovative, place-based housing solutions has never been greater. This event will explore how that investment can deliver more than energy – helping to build the homes Scotland needs for the future.”
Attendees will gain insight into:
- How infrastructure-led worker accommodation demand can unlock new residential development
- Opportunities to align energy investment with local housing strategies
- Practical lessons from live projects and cross-sector collaboration
- The potential to create sustainable, place-based housing outcomes
This session is aimed at professionals working across energy, housing, planning and local government, offering actionable insights and an opportunity to engage in a growing national conversation.
