Wheatley to manage social homes at New Town Quarter
Wheatley Group has signed up to own and manage the 108 affordable homes to be delivered as part of the New Town Quarter development, ahead of the proposals being considered by Edinburgh councillors next week.
Developed in partnership with Ediston, Fusion and Orion Capital Managers, the new homes are part of the largest city centre housing proposals in over a decade.
Following on from the previously consented scheme in 2021, the proposals for the New Town Quarter being considered at the City of Edinburgh Council’s Development Management Sub Committee have been recommended for approval by the council’s head of planning, David Givan.
Ross McNulty, development director at Ediston Real Estate, said: “From the very beginning, we have been determined to make the New Town Quarter a high-quality addition to Edinburgh’s New Town. We’ve worked hard to get the proposals ready for delivery immediately after (hopefully), gaining planning consent.
“The Wheatley Group is a recognised leader in the field of social housing, and the culmination of this arrangement has been five years in the making. We are therefore very confident it will help deliver a development of which we and the city can be proud.
“I have no hesitation in saying that this will be the best located affordable housing ever delivered in a Scottish city centre. I can think of no other example that would come close. It will also be transformational for the lives of those who will live there in one of the best areas in one of the finest cities. If the proposals are approved, anything up to 200 people will be able to move into these exceptional homes in less than three years.
“This development won’t arrest the housing emergency, but it can certainly end it for the people who become tenants of the Wheatley Group at New Town Quarter.”
If approved, development will begin as soon as possible after the planning consent is issued.
