Wheatley volunteers help give Glasgow community a spring clean

A community in the north-east of Glasgow has had a spring clean thanks to volunteers working with the city’s largest social landlord.

Around 20 volunteers joined Wheatley Homes’ Neighbourhood Environmental Team (NETs) as part of the latest Spring into Action campaign.

The volunteers, who were taking part through Wheatley’s Community Benefits programme, supported staff during a day of activities in Sandyhills.

The day included a planting session, an overhaul of the community allotment, painting benches and a general clean-up of the surrounding area.

The action day was one of a series of events taking place across the country throughout the week, shining a spotlight on the essential work Wheatley’s environmental teams carry out in communities every day. Around 120 volunteers from Wheatley’s suppliers and contractors gave up their time to support activities during the week.

Rebecca Newlands, bid and community benefits co‑ordinator at Ogilvie Construction, took part.

She said: “We did a bit of freshening up to the allotment and the gardens in the area, painting the benches and planters and planting some new flowers - just tidying it all up for the residents who live there.

“Hearing the stories from residents and how much of a difference this makes to them makes the work so much more rewarding.”

Jennifer Anderson, director of neighbourhoods at Wheatley Group, said: “We were really pleased that so many volunteers were able to join us through the Community Benefits programme to support our latest Week of Action.

“The energy and dedication of the volunteers were truly inspiring. It wasn’t just about making our neighbourhoods look better -it was about fostering community pride, encouraging ownership, and showing what can be achieved when we work together.

“We are grateful to everyone from our partner organisations who joined us and helped make our communities greener and cleaner for our customers.”

Spring into Action ran from Monday 16 March to Friday 20 March and saw similar events take place in Wheatley communities in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dumfries and Galloway, and across central Scotland.
