North Lanarkshire Council's retirement complex refurbishment reaches completion

Drummond Drive Retirement Complex Refurbishment Open Day

With the £1.5 million refurbishment programme for North Lanarkshire Council’s Drummond Drive Retirement Complex in Wishaw having reached completion, residents at the complex now have access to enhanced living support.

An open day took place on 23 July to celebrate the refurbishment work and give residents and invited guests the opportunity to view the enhancements.

The refurbishment work has modernised both the internal and external aspects of the complex, delivering comfortable areas that aid independent living.

The project, which has been designed to be dementia-friendly includes enhanced wayfinding, new energy-efficient lighting, upgraded handrails, accessible toilets as well as level access throughout the building and outside.

Residents also helped to lead the project through selecting the colours, finishes and furnishings used within the complex.

The refurbished communal lounges provide new spaces for residents to relax and socialise, while new quiet rooms have also been delivered.

A new on-site hairdressing area, raised planters, enhanced outdoor seating and mobility scooter storage have also been delivered in a bid to support wellbeing and independence.

Councillor Michael McPake, convener of Housing, said: “The feedback has been incredibly positive.

“The complex now feels brighter, more open and even more welcoming. It’s a place where people can enjoy their independence while feeling part of a supportive community.”

Stephen Llewellyn, depute chief executive, added: “Walking around the complex today and speaking with residents has been hugely rewarding.

“They talked about how much lighter, brighter and more homely the building now feels, and how the new communal spaces are already bringing people together.”

North Lanarkshire Council continues to invest in its housing stock, in a bid to ensure homes proceed to meet the ongoing needs of residents.
