Work underway at former Largs primary school site

Representatives from hub South West, construction contractor Ashleigh (Scotland) Limited and North Ayrshire Council, including local ward members Tom Marshall and Ian Murdoch, are among those viewing the quick progress being made at the former St Mary’s Primary School site.

Work is progressing rapidly to create 26 new council homes on the site of the former St Mary’s Primary School in Largs.

Once complete, the development will be a natural extension to the neighbouring 123-unit Flatt Road development which was completed in 2022.

The homes at Linn Avenue will be the latest addition to North Ayrshire Council’s house-building programme which is delivering more than 1,600 new homes right across the region.

The £6 million project was given the go-ahead following extensive discussions with the Scottish Government, with £4m secured through its Affordable Housing Supply Programme to enable 26 additional homes to be added to the council’s previously approved new build commitment.

Councillor Tony Gurney, cabinet member for green environment and economy at North Ayrshire Council, said: “The development at Largs is an exciting expansion to our already ambitious development programme.

“The 26 new homes on the site of the former St Mary’s Primary School will complete the regeneration of the former Largs school sites, creating a modern, cohesive and inclusive space for our residents.”

The new homes, which will be available for affordable rent from the council, will provide a mix of two and three-bedroom amenity and general needs homes. The provision of affordable, accessible and sustainable homes supports the Council Plan priorities to improve wellbeing and address climate change.

The main construction contractor is Ashleigh (Scotland) Limited and the construction work is expected to be completed by spring 2025.
