Residents of Yorkhill Housing Association’s Retirement Complex in Overnewton Street, Glasgow, have unveiled a new life-saving defibrillator.

Over the past few months, the residents have held curry nights, burger nights, raffles, and football card competitions to fundraise towards their goal. Yorkhill Housing Association and Glasgow City Council kindly agreed to contribute the remainder of the funds required for the device to be installed.

Residents felt that with an ageing group of tenants within the complex, this had the real potential to save the lives of vulnerable people, and were keen to install the defibrillator in an area that could be used by the wider public. The defibrillator has been registered with the emergency services so that anyone who needs the device has access to it.

St John Scotland assisted in providing the defibrillator, and will be hosting a free training event for local residents on how to use the device, and perform CPR in the event of an emergency.

At an unveiling ceremony hosted in the complex the local resident who organised the project, Gurmeet Mattu, said that he welcomed the installation and that it was “a great accomplishment for tenants, which has the potential to save lives”, speaking of his great pride and calling it his greatest achievement.

Also attending the unveiling ceremony was Councillor Philip Braat, Councillor Angus Millar, and from Yorkhill Housing Association Tony Mallaghan, chief executive, and Grant Kennedy, housing services manager.

Councillors Philip Braat and Angus Millar spoke at the ceremony praising the tenants for their determination. They also praised the successful partnership between Glasgow City Council and Yorkhill Housing Association in completing the project.

Councillor Millar said: “Community defibrillators can save lives in an emergency, and the work done by local residents to bring this facility to Yorkhill is commendable. I am delighted that the Council’s Local Area Partnership has been able to support this important initiative, complementing the community’s fundraising efforts.”

Tony Mallaghan of Yorkhill Housing Association added that he was proud the association was able to contribute, and applauded Gurmeet and the residents for their efforts.
