Young artists in Knightswood have brought a splash of colour to their community by transforming once-plain walls into works of art inspired by the four seasons.

Children and young people from Wheatley Homes Glasgow families came up with the idea of painting the walls beside the steps at the Lincoln Avenue and Kestrel Road estate.

With funding from the Youth Link Open Arts Fund and support from local charity LINKES, the youngsters helped create the designs before picking up their brushes to bring spring, summer, autumn and winter to life.

The murals have brightened up a well-used route through the estate while giving the young people the chance to develop their drawing and painting skills.

Haniya Khan, aged 11, said: “I think it’s really good and it looks very nice. It’s very calming, and it’s so nice to see everyone getting involved. I’m really excited to be part of it.”

Muhammad Khoistani, aged 12, said: “I think it’s a really good idea. It brings colour to the blocks and the walls look really good. I really enjoyed being involved, especially because they gave young people the chance to get involved and be creative.”

The project was supported by Glasgow street artist Danny ‘EJEK’ McDermott, whose previous work includes a tribute to Marvel legend Stan Lee in the Gorbals, the Strath Wonder Wall at the University of Strathclyde and murals of famous Scottish musicians in Paisley.

Heather McGill-Crawford, senior community development worker at LINKES, said: “The young people decided what they wanted to do and were really keen to bring some colour to the area. They’d enjoyed doing graffiti art before and wanted to do it again. Wheatley helped by preparing the walls for us, which meant they could get straight in and start creating.

“It’s been great to see the young people getting involved, enjoying themselves and trying something they wouldn’t normally get the chance to do. It’s their space, so it’s really nice to see them making it their own and taking such pride in the place they live.”

LINKES is based at Lincoln Avenue which works with people of all ages in the surrounding area. Its name comes from the first three letters of both Lincoln Avenue and Kestrel Road, the streets around the multi-storey flats where it is based.

Aisling Mylrea, managing director of Wheatley Homes Glasgow, said: “The young people have done a brilliant job bringing a real splash of colour to their community.

“It’s great to see them getting the chance to be creative and make their mark on the place they call home. Working with LINKES has helped turn their ideas into something that everyone in the community can enjoy.”
