Welfare rights for housing staff
Who is it for and what is it about?
This course is aimed at housing staff who work with tenants on their household budgeting, rent arrears or benefits claims, but are not full-time welfare rights post holders.
It is designed to give participants a working knowledge of the most common benefits that their tenants may be claiming, so that staff can assist with such claims and ensure tenants are maximising their income.
Course Content
• Overview of the current delegation of benefits administration, across UK, Scottish and local government
• Introduction to the most commonly claimed benefits and the criterion for claiming them, including: housing benefit, universal credit, jobseekers allowance, disability living allowance, carer’s allowance, child tax credits, working tax credits and income support
• Navigating the online claims system
• Complex cases – what can complicate benefits claims and where to seek help in these circumstances
