Housing association warns Skye tenants over sub-letting homes to tourists

Lochalsh and Skye Housing Association is warning its tenants on Skye against sub-letting their homes amid increasing tourist visits to the island and the soaring use of short-term letting.

The Association is writing to tenants to remind them of their tenancy agreement, which it said could be violated by the use of short-term letting websites such as Airbnb.

Analysis carried out for the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) earlier this year showed that there is now one Airbnb letting for every 10 homes on the Isle of Skye.

Lochalsh and Skye Housing Association told BBC Scotland that tenants were risking eviction if they were found to be sub-letting their home.

Chief executive Lachie MacDonald said: “The tenant’s agreement is quite clear. Tenants can’t operate a business from the property.

“We rely on the tenancy agreement between us and the tenant and that’s what we will be using to correspond with them about.”

Mr MacDonald added that the same rules apply for people renting out a room or renting out a whole property.

“We’re contacting the tenants to remind them of the obligations of the tenancy agreement. If they ignore this correspondence then the matters will be passed to our solicitors to take it further and implement the terms of our tenancy agreement,” he said.
