ng homes’ ‘Glasgow grannies’ want to dance their way to new community centre

The famous Glasgow Grannies, who danced their way into people’s hearts across the world recently with an impromptu shimmy in the Merchant City, want to use their newfound fame to do something good for the community.

ng homes tenant Edith McAtear and dance partners Sadie Henderson and Flora McFadyen have received local celebrity status since the video of them dancing went viral.

“We’ve been getting noticed everywhere!” said Edith. “We never expected anything like this. We were just having fun. And that’s just it. It’s all about having fun.”

The ladies run a dance class in Possilpoint Community Centre called The Rockers but the venue where they come together every week is a little dilapidated, and they want to help raise funds for a new one.

“The community centre is a looking a little run down,” explains Sadie Henderson. “There’s 25 of us who use it for our dance class, but it’s not just about us. Kids use the facilities. So do the other men’s groups and things like that. There’s such a vibrant community in North Glasgow and we think this centre is due an upgrade.”

A JustGiving campaign has been set up and any donations will completely go to the centre and contribute to building a new hub were ladies like the Glasgow Grannies, and other local people, can meet and socialise. It’s huge for community spirit.

“When we first started getting together, there was only 8 of us – now there’s 25!” said Sadie. “It’s just about having fun, getting out the house, socialising and doing some exercise. When you get to our age, you can’t do anything too strenuous.”

The group is also always looking for new members, with the ages of the women involved ranging from 50-90! They invite anyone to join but acknowledge how difficult it can be to take that first step.

“A lot of people find it difficult to take that step through the doors when they don’t know anyone,” explains Edith. “But we try to make it as welcoming as possible, include everyone, and make everyone feel at home”.
