Challenge Poverty Week brings practical support and community activities to Govanhill

Govanhill Housing Association marked Challenge Poverty Week with a week of practical support, activities and opportunities for local people to come together.

The programme offered a mix of employability support, family activities, free clothing and household items, community information and practical sessions.

One of the busiest sessions was the parent and child event, which included a reading corner as well as new and pre-loved children’s clothes, toys, and baby equipment donated by Association Staff. More than 30 people attended, with all of the available items finding new homes.

A pre-loved clothing event for adults also proved popular, attracting more than 35 people who were able to browse and take away clothes and accessories. Residents were also invited to a community support event, where the Association hosted local organisations, who provided information and advice.

Other activities included employability support from Govanhill Community Development Trust (GCDT), an introduction to DIY with contractor Mears, regular ESOL classes and a ‘Pizza and Prizes’ afternoon.

Claire McGraw, head of housing and tenancy services at Govanhill Housing Association, said: “At Govanhill HA we really care about playing our part in challenging poverty and making a difference to the lives of people in our community. We know the pressures many individuals and families are facing, and we believe we have an important role to play in providing practical support and creating opportunities.

“Challenge Poverty Week is just one example of our commitment, but our work doesn’t stop here. We will continue to work alongside our residents and partners to tackle inequality, reduce the impact of poverty, and help build a stronger community for everyone.”
