As part of the process, the council is seeking feedback on a range of sites submitted through last year’s ‘Call for Ideas’. Most of the submissions relate to housing developments, although sites for business and industry have also been proposed.

Open until Monday, 9 November 2026, the consultation gives local communities an opportunity to comment on potential development sites before decisions are made on which locations should be included in the Proposed Plan.

Councillor Alan Hill, cabinet member for Islands, Communities and Housing, said: “We are keen to hear from as many people as possible on what they think might work for their communities.

“Local development plans are extremely important and provide local authorities with a framework that ensures development decisions are consistent and for the good of the whole area.

“We recognise people’s priorities will change and we try and reflect this when we are producing new LDPs. This one will be no different and it’s vitally important that we get as much input from local people as possible.

“Local knowledge and views are an important part of the assessment process and will help inform decisions about which sites may be included in the next plan.”

The council’s Evidence Report identified a need for around 4,500 new homes across North Ayrshire during the 10-year plan period. Existing sites are expected to deliver approximately 1,000 of these homes, meaning additional land will need to be identified to meet future housing needs.

All potential development sites will be assessed using the council’s Site Appraisal Matrix. The assessment considers a range of factors including environmental impacts, biodiversity, landscape character, flood risk, the historic environment, infrastructure requirements and opportunities for environmental enhancement.

Feedback received through the consultation will help inform the assessment process and the preparation of the Proposed Local Development Plan.
