Cyrenians launches new resource for family conflict professionals
A new resource designed to help practitioners, parents and carers better understand how young people’s brains respond to stress, emotion, conflict and connection has been launched by Cyrenians Scottish Centre for Conflict Resolution (SCCR).
Mind Works: A User Guide translates neuroscience and psychology into practical, accessible insights that can be used across a wide range of settings, including education, youth work, housing, family support, community learning and development, mediation, mental health and wellbeing services.
It aims to provide a framework that helps people recognise how stress affects the brain and how relationship-based approaches can support resilience, communication and positive change.
Mind Works will be of particular interest to:
- Teachers and educational professionals
- Youth workers and CLD practitioners
- Housing and homelessness services
- Family support organisations
- Community groups and volunteers
- Mental health and wellbeing practitioners
- Mediators and conflict resolution services
- Health and social care professionals
- Third sector organisations supporting children, young people and families
The resource encourages readers to move beyond asking ‘What’s wrong with this person?’ and instead consider ‘What might this person be experiencing?’
By understanding how the brain responds when people feel stressed, threatened, or overwhelmed, practitioners can develop greater empathy and identify approaches that strengthen trust, communication and relationships.
SCCR is inviting organisations, networks and practitioners to download, use and share the guide widely. The resource is available via SCCR’s website and free at the point of delivery
Jim Gray, SCCR service manager, said: “Much of the work taking place across Scotland’s third sector is fundamentally about relationships. Whether supporting young people, strengthening families, improving wellbeing or building stronger communities, positive relationships sit at the heart of meaningful change. Mind Works: A User Guide aims to make the science behind behaviour, stress and connection accessible to everyone.”
