East Lothian chief executive thanks community for COVID-19 support

In a letter, Ms Patterson wrote:

The COVD-19 outbreak has presented enormous challenges to the communities of East Lothian and the delivery of public services. Your support has been invaluable in supporting our response to the outbreak.

Since the start of the current emergency, East Lothian Council has focussed on working with partner agencies to follow and implement national government and health advice and, in doing so, provide information and support to the communities we serve. Whilst there has been inevitable disruption to local services and community life, we have worked hard to maintain essential services where possible and provide assistance and support to vulnerable people.

In these unprecedented times, the community spirit of East Lothian has shone through. I have been hugely impressed by the hard work and commitment demonstrated by the many community volunteers around the county. It has been heartening to hear so many examples of individuals and groups pulling together to identify and help others.

From collecting and delivering essential shopping and medicine, preparing meals or just making regular phone calls to relieve loneliness, these actions – to name but a few – have made a major contribution to the safety of vulnerable people and providing some ‘normality’ during this difficult time.

This work has highlighted the importance of the Area Partnership, Community Council and Resilient Communities groups and networks developed over many years in East Lothian, connecting and bringing communities and the council closer together, and underlines the value of preparation and collaboration.

We are also grateful to everyone who has shared information about council services and to our communities for their patience and understanding in following the vital messaging on the importance of staying at home to save lives.

On behalf of the council, I would like to convey my heartfelt thanks to you and everyone in the community who is working tirelessly for the benefit of others at this difficult time.
