Elderpark produces commemorative film to mark 50 years

Current CEO Gary Dalziel interviewing founding Elderpark director Dave LeSage for the film

A specially-commissioned film has been produced by Elderpark Housing to mark its 50th birthday.

The twenty-minute film charts its journey from inception in 1975 to becoming a major housing provider in the Govan area and provides a fascinating glimpse into its past and present.

It was premiered to members of the Association at its recent Annual General Meeting, which was attended by one of the first committee members, Flora Pagan, who was presented with flowers to acknowledge her invaluable contribution.

The film features past and present staff and management committee members recalling some of their memories and thoughts on the role Elderpark Housing has fulfilled within the community during the last five decades.

It also features interviews with first-ever director Dave LeSage and former SFHA chief executive Mary Taylor, who was also a previous director of Elderpark.

Both Dave and Mary, along with another 90 attendees, were present at a recent civic reception held in the Association’s honour by Glasgow City Council to mark this important milestone.

Some of the standout achievements featured in the film include the transformation of Elderpark’s tenement stock from run-down buildings in the mid-1970s to appealing homes which preserve the iconic Victorian and Edwardian built heritage of the Govan area.

The film also discusses the Association’s development programme from the 1980s, as the first community housing association in Glasgow to build new homes, to the present day where it continues to build homes where people want to live.

As a local organisation, community regeneration features largely and demonstrates the commitment that community-based housing associations like Elderpark have played throughout the decades.

Gary Dalziel, chief executive of Elderpark Housing, said: “This film was produced to share some of the story of the 50 years of Elderpark Housing and the role we have played in the Govan community, within Glasgow and in the lives of employees and committee members.

“There were hours of footage and I was very fortunate to interview Dave Le Sage, Mary Taylor and Jim Hastie who were not only involved in the creation and development of Elderpark but also pivotal figures within the Scottish Housing sector throughout their careers.

“It was not possible to feature many of the former committee members or employees who have been involved with Elderpark Housing over the years in a short film but their contribution is recognised and greatly valued by us all.”

Elderpark commissioned renowned production company thirteensquared to make the film.

Kathleen Little, who filmed and produced it, said: “Elderpark Housing has had a fascinating journey over half a century and we have endeavoured to capture the essence of its work over 50 years in the film.

“It became clear while making it the level of affection and high regard in which this long-established housing association is held.”
