A new mural of the so-called ‘First Lady of Govan’ Isabella Elder, has been officially unveiled.

The mural of the renowned Victorian philanthropist - commissioned by Elderpark Housing – was created by well-known artist Rogue One.

A short ceremony to launch the mural – located at Langlands Court just off Langlands Rd in Govan, directly opposite Elder Park – has taken place.

The mural was commissioned by the housing association to mark its 50th anniversary.

Those in attendance included local Govan councillor and deputy leader of Glasgow City Council Ricky Bell, Elderpark chief executive Gary Dalziel, members of the Association’s management committee, staff and a number of local residents.

Often referred to by locals as the ‘First Lady of Govan’, Isabella Elder was the much-admired wife of shipping magnate John Elder, and she used her wealth to leave a lasting legacy to Govan

Her best known gift to Govan was the 37 acres of land that became Elder Park in 1885. She also created a school and a hospital in the community while also pioneering the “Education of Women in Scotland” and has the Isabella Elder Building at the University of Glasgow named after her.

Elder Park Library was officially opened in 1903 and Mrs Elder gave the then large sum of £10,000 towards the building cost and purchase of books. She also provided additional money for the maintenance of the library, insisting it opened on Sundays to allow working people to have more access to literature.

An interesting fact is that there are four “values” inscribed on the pillars which featured in the construction of Elderpark Library – which sits within Elder Park - in the early 1900s. They are Science, Philosophy, Religion and Art. It seems highly appropriate that more than a century on, one of those values – still enormously relevant today - should be represented with the creation of the Isabella Elder mural.

In tribute to her generosity, a statue of Isabella was erected at Elder Park - one of the first statues of a woman in Glasgow.

The original planning application for the mural to Glasgow City Council stated: “The design is inspired by the history of Elderpark Library and the legacy of Isabella Elder, reflecting the Association’s commitment to honouring local culture while contributing to the wider Glasgow mural movement. The artwork is intended to complement the thriving Govan Mural Trail, enhancing the city’s growing reputation for public art and creating a piece of lasting value for both residents and visitors.”

Gary Dalziel, chief executive of Elderpark Housing, said: “Isabella Elder left a long-lasting legacy to the people of Govan and beyond which still resonates today. As we looked more into her history you recognise how outstanding her contribution was to Govan and Glasgow. It is entirely fitting climax to our 50th anniversary year that we recognise the impressive contribution of an exceptional woman to the wellbeing of our community over a century ago.”

The artwork features a profile of Mrs Elder with the backdrop of the library which was recently refurbished. Vibrant red roses feature prominently in the image reflecting a rose garden which is a much-loved feature of Elder Park.

Elderpark tenant Heather St Clair, who attended the unveiling and lives in the building which now features the mural, said: “This is a wonderful and very impressive piece of artwork which celebrates the history of Govan and its strong identity.”

Artist Rouge One said: “It was an honour being asked to do the mural. Not only did I enjoy painting the piece, but also looking into Isabella Elder’s history and taking a walk in the park and visiting the library. The locals in the area were especially nice too. Thank you to everyone.”

Isabella Elder was born in 1828 and died in 1905.
