Fife Council secures more affordable homes across the region
Cllr Judy Hamilton
Fife Council has taken important steps towards tackling the housing emergency by adding dozens more newly built properties to its housing stock.
Councillors on the Cabinet Committee have agreed to progress plans to deliver 36 new build social houses at Primrose Lane in Rosyth, while also approving a deal to buy 18 new build houses from developers working on sites in Kirkcaldy, Markinch and Glenrothes.
The projects have been agreed as part of the wider Affordable Housing Programme and Housing Emergency Action Plan, and are being funded through the council’s Housing Revenue Account Capital Plan alongside support from the Scottish Government.
In relation to the Rosyth development, councillors gave the green light to conclude legally binding agreements with contractors J Smart and Co to develop a mix of social rent housing due for completion in October 2027.
These houses will range in size from two to five-bedroom properties and will help address the significant housing need and demand in the Rosyth area.
Meanwhile, the go-ahead was also given to purchasing 13 new build houses from Persimmon Homes and five new build houses from Allanwater Homes.
All of those are three-bedroom properties, with seven situated in Markinch (West Mill), six in Kirkcaldy (Rosslyn Gait) and five in Glenrothes (Caskieberran Road).
The properties are newly constructed and offer an opportunity to expand Fife Council’s housing stock quickly, with minimal lead-in time compared to traditional development routes.
Councillor Judy Hamilton, the council’s spokesperson for housing, welcomed the latest news.
“We’re committed to increasing the supply of affordable houses and easing pressure on our housing services,” she said.
“To achieve this goal, the council is developing affordable housing through various options utilising land and buildings in council ownership, engaging with private sector landowners, land agents and developers and utilising Scottish Government AHSP funding to assist in the delivery of much needed affordable houses throughout Fife.
“With that in mind, the decisions we’ve taken today ensures that more families will soon have access to safe, secure and affordable housing in various locations across Fife.
“Every new property we secure makes a real difference for families waiting for a house that meets their needs.”
