Former Bellshill council buildings set to make way for new homes

Demolition work is getting underway on two former council buildings in Bellshill, paving the way for plans to bring new council homes to the town centre.

The former Bellshill First Stop Shop housing office on Motherwell Road and the former Registry building on Neilson Street are being demolished as part of North Lanarkshire Council’s New Supply Programme.

The demolition contract begins this month and is expected to be completed by March 2027, providing a cleared site for future housing development.

The buildings have served the local community in different ways over the years. The former Registry building, a red sandstone property dating back to the early 1900s, was originally built as Bothwell Parish Chambers before becoming home to Bellshill’s registration service.

The former First Stop Shop provided residents with access to housing advice and council services. It closed in June 2025 as part of changes to the way local housing services are delivered, with a housing surgery now operating from the Bellshill Cultural Centre across the road.

Plans are being developed for new council housing on the town centre site, providing much-needed homes for local people and helping meet demand from those on the council’s housing waiting list.

Councillor Michael McPake, convener of housing, said: “Regenerating this site is an important step towards bringing this town centre site back into use and creating new homes for local people.

“We know there is a real need for good-quality, affordable housing, and we want to make the best use of the land we have to help meet that demand. We are developing our plans for the future housing, which will help provide more choice for local people and those waiting for a council home.

“The development supports our ambition to deliver 6,000 new council homes by 2035, making better use of available land, bringing underused sites back into use and creating better places to live for communities across North Lanarkshire.”
