Govanhill strengthens support for equality with anti-racist statement

Govanhill Housing Association (GHA) has launched a new Anti‑Racist Statement, reinforcing its long-term commitment to challenging discrimination, promoting equality, and ensuring that the area remains a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone.

The statement outlines the organisation’s pledge to be actively anti‑racist, embedding fairness, dignity, and respect across all services. It also sets out clear expectations for staff, tenants, and contractors, emphasising that racism in any form will be challenged and addressed.

As part of this ongoing work, GHA has also signed up to Refuweegee’s ‘Safe With Us’ initiative, joining a network of organisations across Glasgow committed to offering safe, spaces for people in need. This means that, if someone is experiencing hate, they can make themselves known to the Association, where they will receive support.

Beyond this, the Association is also raising awareness of its role as a remote reporting centre. This means that anyone who is a victim of crime, but for whatever reason, does not wish to report it to the police themselves; the Association can report it on their behalf.

Jennifer Cairns, Govanhill Housing Association chief executive officer, said: “In times of rising division and hostility it is important for us as an Association that we are clear that we stand against racism, and that we will do what we can to challenge discrimination, and support anyone who is being discriminated against.

“We are proud of the fact that Govanhill is one of Scotland’s most diverse communities.  Our Anti‑Racist Statement is a clear commitment to action, challenging racism whenever it occurs, listening to our communities, and ensuring our services are inclusive and fair.”

The Anti‑Racist Statement sets out key principles that will guide the Association’s work, including:

  • Treating all tenants, staff, and community members with dignity and respect
  • Actively challenging racism and discrimination
  • Embedding equality, diversity, and inclusion across all services
  • Listening to and learning from Govanhill’s diverse communities
  • Ensuring continuous improvement through accountability and staff development

The full Statement will be shared with tenants, partners, and community organisations.
