Hanover Scotland chief executive Helen Murdoch to retire

Hanover Scotland’s chief executive Helen Murdoch is retiring after being with the organisation for 26 years, 14 as its CEO and 12 as director of housing and care services.

In thanking Ms Murdoch for her work for the organisation for the past 26 years, Hanover Scotland’s chair described Helen as a strong and dynamic leader with an impressive track record of delivering consistent high performance, becoming one of Scotland’s exceptional leaders in the sector.

Ms Murdoch herself has reflected on the incredible contribution made by Hanover’s staff, their ability to change, to grow and their agile approach. Particularly, recently their resilience, going above and beyond during the COVID-19 pandemic and prior to this in the merger with Arklet and in the superb collection of Saltire awards received for developments in Elgin.

Commenting on her retirement, Helen Murdoch said: “I feel very humble and privileged to have served Hanover, its board, staff and residents and to have worked with so many worthy peers in the sector and beyond. I will remember all of this with great affection and passion. I know that Hanover’s Board and staff will continue the momentum of success well into the future, based on their values and in their sheer drive to serve the customer well.  It is a great place to work.”

Mike Martin, Hanover Scotland chair, added: “Helen has led us through some extremely challenging times, including the present COVID-19 situation. She has led us in reshaping Hanover to develop and provide innovative, high quality housing and services. She is only our second chief executive in 40 years and has made a major contribution to our success as a recognised expert and significant leader in older people’s housing in Scotland.

“I really value her passion for developing people; inspiring and challenging them, always with the intention of helping them to give off their best. I am also reminded of Helen’s knack of keeping people motivated and engaged with complex areas of work through her wee stories, anecdotes and metaphors.

“Helen’s hard work has given us a well-respected organisation with a very strong reputation in the UK sector and beyond for our innovative approach; evidenced by the numerous awards and recognition received over the years. Without a doubt, we have become a stronger and better organisation during her period in charge.”
