Hillcrest Foundation climbs new heights at RRS Discovery Mast Challenge
A determined team from Hillcrest, joined by friends and family, took on the iconic RRS Discovery Mast Climb on Sunday, 14 June, raising vital funds for the Hillcrest Foundation to support disadvantaged families across the communities it serves.
Braving the heights of one of Dundee’s most recognisable landmarks, participants climbed the historic ship’s rigging in a show of teamwork and community spirit. The group successfully raised over £1k, with all proceeds going directly towards the Hillcrest Foundation’s work supporting individuals and families facing hardship in Scotland.
John Alexander, chief executive of Hillcrest, who also took part in the climb, said: “Taking part in the Mast Climb was a fantastic experience and a real team effort. I’m incredibly proud of everyone who stepped up to the challenge, especially alongside their friends and families. The funds raised will make a meaningful difference to people who need support the most, helping them overcome barriers and build more secure futures.”
The RRS Discovery Mast Climb is a popular fundraising event in Dundee, offering participants the chance to scale the ship’s towering masts while raising money for causes close to their hearts. For the Hillcrest team, the challenge symbolised both ambition and solidarity with the communities they support every day.
The Hillcrest Foundation plays a vital role in tackling poverty and inequality across Hillcrest’s areas of operation. By providing financial assistance and support for education, employability and wellbeing, the Foundation helps individuals, families and communities through times of crisis and change.
From helping households access basic necessities such as food and heating, to funding opportunities that improve long-term prospects, the Foundation ensures that people are supported to live better lives. Its work is underpinned by a commitment to dignity, inclusion and creating lasting positive outcomes in local communities.
Funds raised through initiatives like the Mast Climb are crucial in enabling the Foundation to continue responding quickly and effectively to need, particularly as many families face ongoing financial pressures due to cost of living.
