Lar Housing Trust is celebrating picking up a prestigious national award for one of its Edinburgh developments.

The recently completed conversion of an abandoned and derelict church in the Fountainbridge area of the city picked up the top prize in the Small Affordable Development of the Year category in the Homes for Scotland awards scheme.

The repurposing of St Kentigern’s Church provided four high quality townhouses and was complemented by a new build block of 10 two bed flats, built in what was the old car park.

Lar’s chief operating officer, Mikko Ramstedt, said: “We’re delighted to receive this award and thrilled that the dedication of the team involved has been recognised. This was a highly complex project and we have breathed new life into the area allowing local people to put down roots in their own community.”

The development benefits from a ground source heating system, which involved drilling six boreholes to a depth of up to 207 metres. This is highly unusual in such a tight city centre site.

The development was officially opened last summer and the homes are now fully let.
