Housing secretary Màiri McAllan has paid a visit to residents in South Lanarkshire to see firsthand the difference the Scottish Government’s national fuel poverty scheme, Warmer Homes Scotland, has made to their lives.

Ian and Mary Noble welcomed Ms McAllan and Nicola McLeod of Warmworks, the organisation responsible for administering the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme across the country, to their home in South Lanarkshire to showcase the range of high-quality energy efficiency improvements they had installed in June 2024.

When Mr and Mrs Noble applied to the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme, their home had an EPC (Energy Performance Certificate) rating of 39, well below the national average, and keeping it affordably warm would have been extremely difficult.

Through the scheme, Mr and Mrs Noble have had an air source heat pump, solar panels, and domestic battery storage installed, as well as a new hot water system, innovative smart ventilation technology, and smoke and heat detectors. Montali Energy Services, registered and accredited installers in Warmworks’ supply chain, carried out the work.

A post-installation independent inspection for Mr and Mrs Noble’s property showed a significant increase in their home’s EPC rating, from 39 to 75, meaning that it should now be much more affordable to heat.

The Warmer Homes Scotland scheme provides grants for insulation, efficient heating, and renewable technologies for households struggling with high energy bills. Its goal is to make homes more affordable to heat and reduce fuel poverty. Households typically save on average £450 a year in energy bills following the installation of these improvements.
As Managing Agent of the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme, Warmworks provides an end-to-end service, managing every step of the process – from the initial assessment through to the installation and concluding with an independent inspection.

Launched in 2015, the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme has now supported almost 50,000 homes and families across the country in managing their energy costs and living warmer, happier, and healthier lives.

Housing secretary Màiri McAllan said: “It was good to meet Ian and Mary, whose lives have been much improved by support from our national scheme to tackle fuel poverty.

“By supporting people to turn to renewable energy sources, we’re helping to reduce the strain on household finances while benefitting the climate and economy.

“But it is even more critical to tackling poverty and inequality. People shouldn’t have to choose between eating and heating and we’re ensuring that choice isn’t a factor in homes across Scotland.”

Nicola McLeod, Warmworks’ managing director for Scotland, said: “Warmworks has been managing the delivery of the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme for a decade now and it’s hugely rewarding to see the impact it has made and continues to make on families across the country. 10 years on, Warmworks’ mission remains the same – help people be warmer, happier, and healthier at home.

“Replacing inefficient heating systems, such as the one Mr and Mrs Noble had in their home, with high-quality renewable heating improvements means that the Warmer Homes Scotland scheme is supporting people to make the transition to net zero, who otherwise would not have had the means to get there on their own, and it was a privilege to be welcomed into their home today.

“Now is the time to think about preparing for the colder months, and we’d encourage everyone who might be eligible for support to get in touch with Home Energy Scotland on 0808 808 2282 to check if they qualify.”
