Maryhill Housing Association was firmly in the pink this week with a fundraising day to help the battle against breast cancer.

The Pink Day at the Association raised £880, far more than anyone had expected, which will now go to Breast Cancer Now (www.breastcancernow.org).

Staff took part in tombola, raffles, posed in fun photo booths and sold home baking which allowed the team to reach this phenomenal amount.

In addition to lots of donations of bottles from various staff members and friends of Maryhill Housing, a special thanks is due to various external supporters of the event.

These were the Hilton Grosvenor Hotel which donated an overnight stay, Partick Thistle Football Club which donated a signed ball and tickets and Revival Retreat who provided a beauty gift voucher and Rangers FC which provided a gift bag.

In addition to the fun there was a serious underlying message of the need to be aware of breast cancer and to support the ongoing fight to save lives.

To do this clinician Aileen Nicol from the Glasgow Nuffield Hospital in nearby Kelvinside was on hand to offer advice and knowledge about breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Now has revealed that over 4,600 women and 28 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in Scotland each year. It is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women and around 1,000 people in Scotland die from the disease every year.

The organisation has its Scottish base in Edinburgh and is Scotland’s leading charity dedicated to stopping people dying from breast cancer. Its aim is that by 2050, no one will die from breast cancer.

In Scotland the charity support 21 scientists, working on research projects in locations such as Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stirling.

Shirleyanne Reid of Maryhill Housing said: “It was a real team effort with everyone playing their part and helping in every way possible. Hopefully people enjoyed our Pink day in Maryhill and we are thrilled to have raised so much money for this vital cause.”
