New Gorbals Housing Association wins 9th Saltire Award for North Gate development

New Gorbals Housing Association’s milestone North Gate development has won a prestigious Saltire Housing Design Award for 2023.

Guest chair Michal Angus and housing minister Paul McLennan announced North Gate as the winner of the ‘Multiple Public Dwelling’ category – the only prize awarded to a Housing Association this year.

The judges said: “Announcing itself as a ‘gateway to the Gorbals’, North Gate is a dramatic addition to the urban landscape, massing itself to create a profile suitably unique on the Glasgow skyline. It is detailed with precision throughout, with decorative elements subtly incorporated.

“Incorporating communal facilities for the benefit of all, North Gate makes its presence proudly felt, both inside and out.”

Following on from recent Scottish Design and GIA awards, this is North Gate’s third major design accolade and the 9th Saltire Award won by New Gorbals Housing Association since 1999, recognising a sustained period of excellence in house building and placemaking.

Jean Miller, chairperson at New Gorbals Housing Association, said: “We are delighted that North Gate has attained this year’s Saltire Housing Design Award for Multiple Public Dwelling, and could not think of a more fitting project to be recognised with a 9th Saltire award for the Association.

“In the past, the Gorbals suffered terribly from the consequences of poor design, so we know that good design standards are fundamental to the development of good social housing. North Gate is a proud statement of our commitment to design excellence being key to the regeneration of our community.”

Supported by the Scottish Government, the Saltire Housing Design Awards celebrate the best of new housing in Scotland, recognising the contribution it makes to social and cultural conversations. New Gorbals Housing Association has previously won Saltire accolades for projects including two for phases at Moffat Gardens, St Francis Friary, two for phases of Crown Street regeneration, 141 McNeil Street, and two for the first phase of regeneration in Laurieston.

North Gate is a seven-storey property housing a mixture of one- and two-bedroom flats. The building’s dramatic north-facing elevation makes a grand entrance to a regenerated Gorbals and provides a robust street frontage to Crown Street.

Designed by Page\Park architects and built by CCG (Scotland) Ltd, North Gate was funded by Glasgow City Council in partnership with the Scottish Government, with New Gorbals Housing Association contributing £2.4 million private funding obtained from The Housing Finance Corporation.
