New ‘Help to Buy’ homes taking shape at former Edinburgh school

The Schoolhouse External CGIProgress is well under way with the first new homes now on site at a new housing development in Niddrie, Edinburgh.

Being developed by CCG (Scotland) Ltd, The Schoolhouse is giving a new lease of life to the site of the former Niddrie Mill Primary School.

The development will comprise a total of 66 residential properties, of which 32 are available for private sale including seventeen 1 and 2 bedroom apartments and fifteen 2 and 3 bedroom terraced homes. The site will also provide 34 mixed tenure homes for social and mid market rent which, upon completion, will be managed by social housing provider Places for People.

CCG (Scotland) Ltd director Calum Murray, said: “CCG is delighted to be working with partners and playing our part in strengthening the vibrancy of Niddrie and the Craigmillar community. In building the highest standard of homes at The Schoolhouse, we are utilising our state of the art Off-Site Manufacturing facility to increase the quality of the finished product as well as significantly reducing the build time and minimising waste.”

The homes that are available for private sale have the significant added benefit of Help to Buy and have already taken a number of reservations. The development is registered for a subsidiary Help To Buy Scheme, designed for lower volume developers, and while availability of the main Help To Buy Scheme has now ended, it continues to be available for applications up to 31st December 2015.

The Schoolhouse is the transformation of a beautiful brick built landmark building and its surrounding former playground.

The development will breathe new life into the site, which having for many years thronged with the chatter of children and buzz of activity, stayed close to the hearts of many. With sustainability being a cornerstone of the CCG ethos, they have sympathetically retained the characterful and solid, brick built façade of the original school building, and enhanced it with the creation of wonderful apartments within. The development will feature vibrant new green spaces, including around the Category C listed memorial for Major General Andrew Gilbert Wauchope of Niddrie Marischal House, which will be preserved in its original landmark location in front of the school building.

The Schoolhouse forms part of the regeneration programme for Craigmillar being delivered by PARC Craigmillar Ltd that will see 2,000 new homes built in the area.
