New Home Group Scotland development ends five-year wait for Edinburgh family

The completion of 36 new homes by Home Group Scotland at Farrier Fields in Edinburgh has brought a five-year housing wait for a family.

The development is helping to respond to significant demand for family-sized affordable homes in the city, with 20 three-bedroom and 16 two-bedroom properties providing homes for social and mid-market rent.

Among the families settling in is Hayley, 35, who put her name on the housing list as soon as she found out she was pregnant with her son Brody. Almost five years later, Brody is four and the pair have spent his whole life in her mum’s two-bedroom flat, sharing a single bed.

Hayley got the keys to her new two-bedroom social rent home in August. Brody now has his own bedroom, with Spider-Man bedding and wall stickers.

Hayley said: “As soon as the first night we stayed here, I was just like, ‘Oh, this is it.’ It’s just having our own space and having me and him time, whereas my mum’s house was always busy. We had no time to ourselves.

“I’m 35 and I just now feel like I’m more of an adult, just having this. I feel like this is probably my forever home.”

Home Group Scotland has increased the number of affordable homes delivered at Farrier Fields from the 28 originally planned to 36. A further eight homes were secured for social rent through the Scottish Government’s National Acquisition Programme, bringing the overall development to 22 homes for social rent and 14 for mid-market rent.

Bryony Willett, director of Home Group Scotland, said: “The most important thing about completing a development like Farrier Fields is seeing people move into homes that meet their needs. Hayley and Brody had been waiting almost five years, and there are many more families in Edinburgh in the same position.

“We know there is significant demand for affordable family-sized homes, and at Farrier Fields we’ve been able to provide 36 more, including eight additional homes for social rent beyond those originally planned.”

The completion of Farrier Fields also marks a significant milestone in Home Group Scotland’s long-standing partnership with Taylor Wimpey, taking the number of affordable homes delivered together to 250. The partnership has helped Home Group Scotland deliver affordable housing across a number of developments, with further homes to follow at Calderwood in West Lothian.
