Tighean Innse Gall (TIG) has reported a year of major impact across the Western Isles, supporting more than 1,300 households with low-cost home ownership, energy advice, and vital home adaptations.
The achievements were presented at TIG’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) this week, where staff, partners and community members came together to reflect on 2024/25 and look ahead to the year to come.
Among the highlights was the completion of four new Rent-to-Buy homes in North Uist – TIG’s most energy-efficient properties yet – giving local people a first step into ownership.
TIG’s Care & Repair service carried out over £379,000 in major adaptations and 185 smaller improvements, helping residents live independently and safely at home. One client, Mr MacNeil of Lewis, praised the service as “excellent” after a new stairlift restored his ability to access essential facilities in the home.
The Energy Advice Service (TEAS) provided frontline support to households struggling with rising energy costs. Over the year, the team secured £300,000 in financial gains for clients, distributed more than 1,100 energy vouchers, and delivered practical measures such as energy-saving appliances. For pensioner Mr Towers, this persistence brought a £1,949 refund after a long-running dispute with his energy supplier.
TIG’s work was also recognised nationally when energy advice manager Kirsty Macleod was named Fuel Poverty Hero 2024 by Energy Action Scotland.
Alongside direct services, TIG continued to deliver development projects and partnerships – from working with the team managing the Calanais Visitor Centre redevelopment with Urras nan Tursachan to supporting housing masterplans across the islands with Hebridean Housing Partnership.
Chair of TIG, Ian McCulloch, said: “This report reflects the tremendous efforts of our staff, partners and Management Committee in delivering tangible outcomes across the Outer Hebrides. From affordable homes and adaptations to energy advice and advocacy, TIG continues to support and empower people to live safely, comfortably and affordably.”
Chief executive Donna Smith added: “Despite rising costs and a challenging funding environment, we have expanded services, strengthened partnerships, and made a real difference to people’s lives. Looking ahead, we remain committed to tackling fuel poverty, increasing affordable housing opportunities, and supporting independent living across our communities.”
