Over 50 new council homes for Airdrie

Work is now underway on over 50 new council homes planned for the Airdrie area, on two sites, Glenacre Drive and Petersburn Road.

Sod cuttings signalled the start of two of our latest housing projects that will see 16 new homes built at Glenacre Drive and 40 homes at Petersburn Road, on the site of the former primary school.

These latest developments form part of our ambitious new supply programme which aims to deliver 5,000 new homes by 2035, regenerating our communities and town centres, creating jobs and boosting the local economy.

Cutting the first sods was North Lanarkshire Council’s housing convener, Councillor Heather Brannan-McVey, who was joined by local councillors, Sandy Watson and Michael McBride. Also attending were Gary Climson, Chairman, McTaggart Construction; NLC Project Managers, Martin Green and Amy Docherty; Stephen Llewellyn, Chief Officer, Housing Management and Tony Mallaghan, Housing Development Manager.

Councillor Brannan-Mcvey said: “Today marks the start of two more new council housing projects as we continue to build on the excellent progress we’re making in providing new, modern and affordable homes to communities across North Lanarkshire.

“All of our new homes are designed and built to the highest standard and are highly energy efficient as we’re embracing renewable technologies and building greener. They’re designed for varying needs, meaning they adapt over time to suit tenants’ needs and are secure by design.

“We have several exciting housing projects underway across the Airdrie area, including within the town centre, helping us transform the local community, improving the lives of local people and delivering economic opportunities. We’re delivering first-class homes that will meet the needs of our residents now and for generations to come.”

McTaggart Construction is delivering the new homes which are a mix of houses, bungalows and cottage flats. The Glenacre Drive site will see 16 houses made up of 8 x 1-bedroom, 7 x 2-bedroom and 1 x 4-bedroom. Three of the homes at this site will be wheelchair accessible. The Petersburn Road site will see 40 Homes in total made up of 4 x 1-bedroom, 25 x 2-bedroom, 8 x 3-bedroom and 3 x 4-bedroom homes. Thirteen of these homes will be wheelchair accessible.

Gary Climson, chairman, McTaggart Construction, added: “We are delighted to be delivering these projects on behalf of North Lanarkshire Council and playing a part in the regeneration of the local area, not only through the creation of new homes but also supporting the community by creating job opportunities, work placements and getting involved with local organisations.”

Both new developments are supported by a funding contribution from the Scottish Government.
