Persimmon urges residents in Edinburgh flats to evacuate amid safety concerns
Residents of a block of flats in Edinburgh have been called on to urgently leave their flats due to a fire risk in the building.
Persimmon homes reached out to residents of the bond building located in Bonnington on 14 July, telling them that they would be temporarily relocated, reports The Scotsman.
In 2025, residents expressed their frustration at the idea of 80-weeks of remediation work on the building. Some had said that they had signed leases on properties without being advised of the prospect of the remediation work.
Persimmon Homes said in an email to residents it received “specialist advice” concerning the building following fire safety inspections and investigations.
In a message to residents, it said: “Based on this advice, and as a precautionary measure in the interests of resident safety, Persimmon Homes is strongly recommending that all residents temporarily re-locate from the bond Building.
“We appreciate that this news will be upsetting and disruptive, and we sincerely apologise for the impact it will have. However, based on the expert advice received, we believe this is the safest and most responsible course of action while longer-term remediation works are developed and carried out.”
Persimmon has said that it has not reached a stage where it can say the period of time that residents have been asked to relocate for.
Persimmon said: “The works programme is still being developed, and the full scope of works has not yet been finalised. As a result, confirmed timeframes are not currently available. Further information will be shared with residents as soon as it becomes available.”
Based on the information distributed by Persimmon Homes, landlords who lose tenants will not see their rent covered by the developer but if a tenant signs a tenancy agreement, the Insurance Claims Accommodation Bureau (ICAB) will rehome them.
The guidance explains: “If your tenant leaves, you may source a new tenant for your flat at The Bond Building.
“Once all required documentation and a signed tenancy agreement are in place, Persimmon will arrange for the new tenant to be placed in temporary accommodation through ICAB.”
Residents will be asked to relocate from their flats for a period between one and two years. On July 14th, residents were invited to a number of consultations on the relocation process.
During March 2024, over 100 residents were evacuated from their flats when a fire started at the block of flats in Bonnington.
The blaze prompted worries that there could be a repetition of the Grenfell fire of 2017.
A spokesperson for Persimmon Homes and the Bond Building Owners Committee said: “Persimmon Homes is offering immediate temporary accommodation to all affected residents.”
