The application, lodged with Dundee City Council, seeks permission to deliver 44 homes at the site, The Courier & Advertiser (Angus and Dundee) reports. 

The homes will be a mixture of 32 flats, nine townhouses and three terraced properties, and would span across four blocks.

An extensive communal amenity within the courtyard area has also been proposed. 

An existing brick chimney - a remnant of the original factory on the site - is to be maintained under the proposals.

Hillcrest Homes are working alongside Cullross for the delivery of the development.

In 1969, Dens Road Market first opened and was once called “Dundee’s Petticoat Lane” – in reference to the famous market in London’s East End. 

But the market had begun to struggle by the early 2010s, with the owners having gone into administration prior to it closing in 2013.

That year, local businessman Chris Airlie purchased the site. Dundee City Council gave permission in 2017 for the market to be transformed into a £1.5 million adventure centre. But the plans were later scrapped. 

The site’s owner had told The Courier in December 2022 that he was open to putting it on the market for housing. Just days before this, the roof at the old market collapsed.

In August 2023, fire crews were called to the site after a fire started at the site.
