Reidvale returns to regulatory compliance after major improvement journey

Reidvale Housing Association has welcomed confirmation from the Scottish Housing Regulator that it has returned to compliant regulatory status.

This milestone marks a significant turning point for the organisation and reflects several years of intensive work by tenants, staff, committee members, and partner organisations.

In an updated engagement plan for the Association, the Regulator has recognised the extensive improvements Reidvale has made across governance, financial management, and understanding of the condition of its homes.

The Association has strengthened its governance framework, modernised its organisational structures, introduced a robust performance management system, and completed in depth stock condition surveys that now provide a clear picture of the work required to safeguard its historic tenemental homes.

Denise Dempsey, chairperson of Reidvale Housing Association, said: “Today is an important moment for Reidvale and for the community that has stood by this organisation through a difficult and uncertain period. We are incredibly proud of the progress made, but we are also very aware that this is not the end of the journey.

“There is still a significant amount of work to do, especially around the long-term programme needed to protect our pre-1919 tenements. What matters is that we now have a strong foundation in place and a shared commitment to delivering for our tenants.”

The Association’s turnaround has taken place during a period of deep challenge for the organisation and its community. In recent years, Reidvale members voted to remain an independent, community-controlled landlord, sparking a renewed focus on rebuilding trust and ensuring long-term sustainability.

Tenants have since shown strong confidence in the Association’s direction, and new community activity, including the opening of The Halliday Foundation at Reidvale Neighbourhood Centre, has helped reenergise local participation.

Julie Smilie, interim director of Reidvale Housing Association, said: “This achievement belongs to the people of Reidvale. The commitment shown by our committee, staff and tenants has been remarkable.

“We are grateful to the Regulator for its constructive engagement and for recognising the significant distance the organisation has travelled. Our task now is to keep strengthening services, retain the highest standards of governance, and work with tenants to shape the next chapter for this community.”

Reidvale will continue to work closely with the Scottish Housing Regulator, providing regular updates on the delivery of its improvement plans, its programme of stonework repairs, and the recruitment of a permanent senior officer.

As the Association looks ahead, it said it remains focused on strengthening homes, services and community life and ensuring tenants continue to have a strong voice in the decisions that shape their future.
