Revised plans submitted for Laurieston development

Plans for a third phase of the Laurieston development were approved in 2022

Updated proposals to alter the layout of a major mixed-use development in Laurieston have been lodged with Glasgow City Council.

The Urban Union development, comprising homes, offices, shops, and leisure facilities, forms part of a wider regeneration project on the site bounded by Eglinton Street, Gorbals Street, Norfolk Street, and Cumberland Street.

Approval was granted in 2022 for almost 350 new homes, alongside provision for a hotel, food and drink venues, student accommodation, new roads, parking, public spaces, and landscaping.

The latest application, prepared by Stallan-Brand Architecture & Design Ltd on behalf of Urban Union, seeks amendments to parts of the Phase 3A masterplan, specifically Blocks A and L.

For Block L, the proposed alterations are described as “minor” but would involve a switch in house type — replacing properties with rear terraces and small gardens in favour of homes without terraces but with larger back gardens.

In Block A, parallel parking bays to the rear would be removed to allow garden spaces to be extended.

According to the design and access statement, the revised approach aims to “establish a dynamic ground plane” with buildings “rooted in their surroundings”. The vision is for a “coherent framework of routes, public realm and communal gardens” offering a varied mix of public and semi-public spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.
