Rosewell community to benefit from 25 new social homes

Work on a new £4.8 million social housing development has started in Midlothian.

Wheatley Homes East, part of Wheatley Group, is building 25 new affordable homes at Rosewell.

The new high-quality, energy-efficient homes include a mix of one-bedroom cottage flats and three-bedroom terraced houses.

Barratt Homes is building the new flats and houses which will have an energy efficiency rating of B to help tenants save money on their energy bills.

The Rosewell development is being funded by £2.7m of grant funding from Scottish Government and £2.1m from Wheatley Group.

Wheatley Group director of development and regeneration, Lindsay Lauder, said: “These homes will help meet the high demand for affordable housing in Midlothian.

“We’re delighted to be working with our partners, including Midlothian Council and the Scottish Government, in building homes and communities people are proud to live in.”

Housing minister Paul McLennan added: “The right to a warm, safe and affordable home is critical to wellbeing and is a right everyone deserves. Wheatley Homes East plays a valuable role in increasing the range of housing available to rent throughout Scotland.

“The Rosewell development, which the Scottish Government has supported with £2.7m of funding, will enable Wheatley Homes East to provide 25 new high quality, energy-efficient homes in Midlothian.

“High quality housing is a key pillar of Housing to 2040, whilst also eradicating fuel poverty and homelessness and ensuring everyone has access to green space and essential services.

“Wheatley Homes East plays a key role in building high-quality homes and I welcome the start on site for construction of these new affordable houses in Rosewell.”

Nick Wright, development director at Barratt Developments East Scotland, said: “Barratt Developments is proud to once again be working hand-in-hand with Wheatley Group to deliver much-needed affordable accommodation in Midlothian.

“As with all our quality homes, tenants will benefit from the properties’ energy efficiency rating – saving them money on their monthly energy bills. We look forward to working with Wheatley Group on this small development of homes, and welcoming new residents to the Rosewell community in 2024.”

The homes are expected to be complete at the end of 2024.
