Shelter Scotland has welcomed Elena Whitham MSP as the newest member of its committee.

Ms Whitlam brings a varied and diverse wealth of professional and personal experience to the charity’s ongoing fight for home.

For over 10 years, Ms Whitlam worked for Scottish Women’s Aid in Ayrshire and held the position of depute council leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities. She was also part of the Scotland Homelessness Prevention Review Group. After experiencing homelessness herself, she has spoken out about the injustices facing those without a safe place to call home.

Ms Whitlam, who was recently appointed for an initial three-year term, has announced that she will not seek re-election in next year’s Scottish Parliament election.

Elena Whitham MSP said: “Home is everything and right now, too many people in Scotland are feeling the sharp end of the housing emergency. Having grappled with the reality of homelessness with a baby myself, I am steadfast in my belief that we must do everything within our powers to ensure homelessness is prevented where possible and always brief.

“I am honoured to join Shelter Scotland’s Committee at this crucial time as collectively as a nation, we strive to end homelessness for good.”

Shelter Scotland Committee chair, Kezia Dugdale, added: “I’m delighted to welcome Elena to the Shelter Scotland Committee. Her deep understanding of homelessness and housing—both professionally and personally—will be an invaluable asset to our work.

“It’s been over a year since a national housing emergency has been declared, and the work of Shelter Scotland has never been more important. As 2.3 million people are impacted by the housing emergency, we know they are struggling with the condition, security, suitability or affordability of their home, or have faced discrimination while trying to find one.

“The problem will only get worse unless there is serious and urgent change. With the expertise of Elena, we will continue to fight for a future where everyone in Scotland has a safe, permanent and comfortable home.”
