South Ayrshire Council set to exceed social housing targets

South Ayrshire Council continues to deliver affordable housing, with 147 more homes to be completed or started on site by the end of 25/26.

The figure comes from the council’s Strategic Housing Investment Plan (SHIP), which outlines affordable housing investment priorities and targets.

The SHIP reveals that 258 affordable homes were completed in 2024/25 thanks to large-scale housing developments in Mainholm and Prestwick, and projects delivered by RSL partners. Another 147 homes are set to be on site or delivered early next year at Riverside Place, Green Street and through strategic buy backs.

These buildings use a mix of solar panels, air source heat pumps mechanical ventilation and heat recovery systems. This results in energy efficient homes which can help tenants to reduce their utility bills and tackles issues such as fuel poverty.

Another important feature is the design of the homes. They can be adapted over time to accommodate the changing needs of tenants. Doors and hallways are wider and there are moveable partitions to create open plan living as required.

Councillor Martin Kilbride, policy lead for housing and property services at South Ayrshire Council, said: “A total of 921 affordable homes have been delivered across South Ayrshire over the last five years or so, which is a remarkable achievement.

“There will always be a bigger demand for housing in larger population areas, but we have also undertaken a rural housing needs study to highlight demand beyond our towns.

“We will continue to work with key partners such as Ayrshire Housing, West of Scotland Housing Association, and Hannover Housing as we look to deliver our overall target of 675 affordable homes by 2028.”
