Stirling Council reaches 700th solar panel milestone

Council housing in Stirling continues to become more environmentally friendly and energy efficient after the 700th installation of solar panels took place this week.

The installation at a block of flats in Stirling’s Mayfield Court is part of an ongoing investment in renewable technology in the housing stock aimed at reducing fuel poverty, improving energy efficiency ratings and reducing the council’s overall carbon footprint.

Council leader Johanna Boyd said: “With electricity costs forming such a high proportion of household budgets, especially for those tenants with electric heating, it is important that as a landlord we do all we can to reduce energy costs through a range of measures and I’m delighted to witness this latest solar panel installation.”

Overall the 700 installations will generate an estimated two million units of electricity each year, enough to meet the average annual electricity needs of 500 homes.

Use of the panels is also expected to result in an estimated annual saving of just under £300 for each household when it comes to electricity bills.

Housing portfolio holder, councillor Violet Weir, added: “The saving will actually increase each year as the cost of electricity is expected to continue to rise so, this really is an investment that will continue to benefit our tenants for years to come.

“It’s important to know that solar PV is just part of a larger investment programme that Stirling Council is carrying out to improve energy efficiency and reduce costs, with other measures including ensuring that all our properties are properly insulated and offering all tenants with properties connected to the local gas network A-rated central heating.”
