Student accommodation in Glasgow celebrates ‘topping out’

Clark Contracts has celebrated the topping out of The Ice Vault student accommodation development on Osborne Street in Glasgow, delivered for clients Far East Orchard Limited and Aurum UK, with Ambassador Group being the development manager.

The event was attended by members of the project team and representatives from Clark Contracts, including directors Michael Scanlan and Danny McKibbens, alongside the wider project team.

To mark the occasion, Sean Gillies from Aurum UK cast the final section of concrete on the development, symbolising the completion of the building’s structural frame.

Once complete, the 11‑storey development will provide 273 purpose‑built student rooms, supported by a range of high‑quality amenities including common spaces, cinema, gymnasium and a large south‑facing terraces offering views over the River Clyde.

Designed with sustainability at its core, the development is targeting a BREEAM “Excellent” rating. Roof‑mounted air source heat pumps will provide heating and hot water for the building, while Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) have been incorporated through green and blue roofs. The building will also achieve WiredScore ‘Platinum’, demonstrating market‑leading digital connectivity to support students in their studies and daily lives.

The project team includes Gardiner & Theobald, mosaic architecture + design, and Blyth & Blyth.

Alan Tang, group CEO and executive director of Far East Orchard, said: “The topping out of The Ice Vault represents another step forward in executing Far East Orchard’s strategy to scale our purpose-built student accommodation business in the UK.

“Together with our partners, Aurum UK and Ambassador Group, we are committed to delivering sustainable assets that meet the evolving needs of students, and look forward to its completion.”

Michael Scanlan, director at Clark Contracts, added: “Reaching the topping out stage at The Ice Vault is an important milestone for the project and reflects the scale and ambition of the development.

“The building has been carefully designed to provide students in Glasgow with a high‑quality, future‑focused place to live, with sustainability and wellbeing at its core. We are proud to see the project taking shape and look forward to its completion.”
