Scottish retrofitting firm Union Technical has been appointed to the National Home Decarbonisation Group (NHDG), which brings experts together to drive forward the UK’s residential retrofit ambitions.
Its members include some of the most established and influential organisations in decarbonisation, united by a shared commitment to strengthening the retrofit supply chain, shaping effective policy, and accelerating innovation across the sector.
Union Technical’s appointment ensures that Scottish delivery experience, insight, and innovation are represented at a national level.
Scotland has long been at the forefront of retrofit, energy efficiency, and fuel poverty mitigation, and Union Technical’s membership brings this expertise directly into national policy discussions and delivery frameworks.
Union Technical is well-placed to contribute to the national agenda-setting group with experience in operating across Scotland’s diverse housing landscape. From urban retrofit programmes to large-scale housing projects and patented retrofitting techniques, Union Technical brings a wealth of experience and knowledge – and importantly brings a voice for Scotland to the table.
Michael Sweeney, founder and director of Union Technical, said: “Being appointed to the National Home Decarbonisation Group is a big moment for us as an organisation, but also for Scotland and the future of our housing stock and the stability of accessible, quality homes for people across the country.
“We have a strong focus on working collaboratively with the group and with government to deliver high-quality energy efficiency projects that improve the UK’s housing stock, particularly for households living in fuel poverty.
“This membership recognises the exceptional work we have already delivered in this field and strengthens our ability to continue doing so with our current and future partners and clients, while helping to shape a fairer, more effective approach to home decarbonisation across the UK.”
As the UK works towards ambitious residential decarbonisation and net zero targets, collaboration across the sector is essential.
By joining the NHDG, Union Technical will work alongside industry leaders to help tackle fuel poverty and support households facing the combined pressures of rising energy costs, the cost-of-living crisis, health inequalities, and climate change.
The NHDG engages closely with policymakers to support delivery of national home decarbonisation objectives. Members are working collaboratively to deliver the government’s £15 billion Warm Homes Plan, ensuring funding is invested in high-quality home upgrades that improve comfort, reduce emissions, and create lasting benefits for millions of households and communities across the UK.
Michael added: “If the UK is to meet its net zero ambitions while addressing the housing shortage and quality challenges, we must take a coordinated, long-term approach. That means aligning policy with practical delivery experience.
“Through our work across Scotland, we understand the real-world challenges of scaling retrofit programmes, from supply chain pressures to skills development, and we are committed to ensuring these insights inform national decision-making.
“Over the past decade, we have built a business that delivers retrofit at scale while maintaining quality, compliance and measurable impact for residents. We’ve grown sustainably, expanded our workforce, and successfully delivered complex projects across diverse housing types and communities throughout Scotland.
“That experience of turning policy ambition into practical, high-quality delivery on the ground is what we bring to the National Home Decarbonisation Group. By sharing what we have learned, from scaling operations to strengthening supply chains and investing in skills, we can help accelerate progress across the UK and ensure the wider decarbonisation agenda is both achievable and impactful.”
Recently, Union Technical’s leadership has been recognised nationally with founders Michael Sweeney and Owen Coyle named as Scottish regional winners at the EY Entrepreneur of the Year UK Awards - a prestigious programme that celebrates visionary leaders who drive economic performance and societal impact.
Additionally, Union Technical has been recognised as one of the fastest growing firms in the UK by Fast Growth 50 (FG50) index for the second year in a row.
