Hawick based Waverley Housing has been chosen as Skills Development Scotland’s SME Employer of the Year for workplaces with less than 250 employees.

Waverley has supported the apprenticeship programme for a number of years and currently has eight modern apprentices working with them in a variety of roles.

Waverley’s chief executive, Margaret Ross, said: “We were delighted to reach the finals but to go on and win the award, particularly given that the calibre of entrants was very high, was fantastic. At Waverley we recognise the importance of creating work experience opportunities for young people within the Scottish Borders and we believe that the Modern Apprenticeship programme helps to produce the skills and expertise that will support long term, sustainable employment. Winning this award is testament to our commitment to the Modern Apprenticeship programme.”

The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) was category sponsor of the SME Employer of the Year Award.

Hugh McCafferty, regional delivery manager at CITB, said: “SME’s are the lifeblood of the construction industry and it is fantastic to see Waverley Housing awarded for its great efforts.”
