Wheatley tenant charts journey from homelessness to a safe place to call home

After five months sleeping in her car, Tammy Smith still remembers the moment she was offered a home of her own.

Now settled in Annan, the Wheatley Homes South tenant is building a more secure future for herself and her children. Tammy, 44, became homeless after the breakdown of a relationship and continued to work and care for her family while living in her vehicle.

Despite the challenges she faced, Tammy remained focused on finding stability for herself and her four children.

She said: “It was heartbreaking. What kept me going were the sunsets at the end of each day. They reminded me that there was light at the end of the tunnel.

“I knew I was on Wheatley Homes South’s radar for a home, but I didn’t know when that might happen. I just kept believing that something good would come.”

That hope was realised when Tammy was offered a home in Annan by the social landlord.

“It felt surreal,” she said. “I had to read the email several times because I couldn’t believe it. I was overjoyed. Every day until I got the keys felt like a week. Then, when I finally walked through the door, I felt like I’d been given the world.”

Tammy was supported by SHAX, Women’s Aid, and Wheatley Homes South. She also received support through Wheatley’s Starter Packs programme, which provides essential household items such as bedding, crockery and cleaning products to tenants moving into a new home with very little.

“Wheatley Homes South has been nothing short of phenomenal. Everyone has been so supportive, and I can’t thank them enough,” she said.

For Tammy, a stable home is about much more than having a roof over her head. It means having a safe and welcoming place for her four children, aged 17, 16, 11 and eight.

“It’s about creating a place that’s full of fun, laughter and happiness,” she said. “I want my children to come and feel safe, warm and loved. That’s what they deserve. They’ve been through some difficult experiences, but they’ve come through it and I’m so proud of them.”

Alex Lamb, managing director at Wheatley Homes South, said: “It’s great to hear the difference a new home has made to Tammy’s life.

“Sadly, many people across Dumfries and Galloway still face housing challenges similar to those Tammy experienced.

“We’re continuing to invest in both new and existing homes, working closely with our partners at the Scottish Government and Dumfries and Galloway Council to help meet growing housing demand across the region.

“It’s good to see Tammy feeling positive about the future and starting the next chapter of her life in Annan.”

Wheatley’s ambitious new-build programme in Dumfries and Galloway will see hundreds of new homes delivered at around a dozen sites across the region. This includes as part of the community-led regeneration at Newington in Annan as well as at Lochside and Summerhill in Dumfries.
