Wheatley development nears completion in Stranraer

Work is progressing at a new £4.1 million development that will deliver nine new homes and a housing office hub in Stranraer.

Wheatley Homes South has partnered with McTaggart Construction to deliver nine two-bedroom properties at Ashwood Drive in the town, with tenants expected to move in by spring 2026.

The Scottish Government has contributed £1.4m towards the project, with Dumfries and Galloway Council providing an additional £500,000.

Alex Lamb, managing director at Wheatley Homes South, said: “We are pleased our work at our new-build development in Stranraer is nearing completion.

“This project will provide nine new homes, offering modern and comfortable living spaces for our tenants. These energy-efficient homes will feature solar panels, energy-efficient heating, and high levels of insulation.

“Additionally, there will also be new office space for Wheatley staff, ensuring they remain at the heart of the community we serve.

“We are grateful for the support of our partners at Dumfries and Galloway Council and the Scottish Government in making this development a reality. Their collaboration has been instrumental in being able to deliver these much-needed new properties in Stranraer town centre.

“We look forward to welcoming our new tenants and seeing them settle into their new homes in the spring of 2026.”

McTaggart Construction has also supported employment and training opportunities in the local area.

Janice Russell, managing director at McTaggart Construction, said: “It’s rewarding to see the positive impact the development is having on local employment in Stranraer. We’ve already employed four local people on this project, a direct result of our commitment to creating opportunities within the community.

“Our partnership with Dumfries and Galloway College on an employability project has been invaluable, and we’re looking forward to continuing this collaboration with another initiative in the new year.

“We currently have two apprentices gaining hands-on experience on site, which reflects our ongoing investment in developing the next generation of skilled tradespeople.

“Projects like this demonstrate how construction can be a real catalyst for local employment and skills development.”

The homes are part of the regeneration and new-build plans by Wheatley Homes South, Dumfries and Galloway’s largest social landlord, which aims to deliver hundreds of new and energy-efficient homes by 2028.

The landlord previously announced an investment of £39.1m across its existing homes and communities in the region, including £4.8m in the Stewartry and £9.4m in Wigtownshire.
