Housing minister Paul McLennan joined the Barrhead Housing team and board members on Friday to find out about the work of the association in the community and to celebrate the association’s achievement of owning and managing 1000 homes.

Since it was set up in 1986 to improve tenemental properties in the centre of the town, Barrhead Housing has expanded to now own and manage 1,000 homes throughout East Renfrewshire, mainly in Barrhead, Neilston, Newton Mearns and Thornliebank. As the only local, community housing association in East Renfrewshire, it has made a difference to the lives of local people and to the fabric of the town, reducing inequalities and providing opportunities for many.

John Hamilton, Barrhead Housing chairperson, said: “This is significant moment for Barrhead Housing and an achievement of which we are very proud. On behalf of the governing board, I would like to acknowledge the work of all those who have governed, managed and supported the association over the years, and to thank the current team who in a challenging climate have delivered a remarkable new build development programme on target.”

Housing minister Paul McLennan added: “Barrhead Housing Association has reached an impressive milestone in providing 1,000 safe, warm and affordable homes to households throughout East Renfrewshire. The homes are already making a difference to the lives of people and families, reducing inequality and supporting the local community.

“We look forward to continuing to work with Barrhead Housing Association on our commitment to deliver 110,000 affordable homes across Scotland by 2032. At least 70% of these will be for social rent and 10% will be in remote, rural and island communities.”

Lorna Wilson, chief executive, commented: “We appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Housing Minister, and welcome the support of both the Scottish Government and East Renfrewshire Council as we continue to work together to plan for and provide even more homes for the many people who need them.”

Nicola McGowan, who recently moved into the 1000th Barrhead Housing home with her partner Nikki and their children, said: “It’s just lovely having a house for our children to grow up in, having the garden and everything. And it’s affordable - because we came from a private let. It’s so important to have affordable housing that’s in good condition.”
