Council acquires Garscadden House to allow creation of community hub

Garscadden House in Drumchapel has now been fully acquired by Glasgow City Council, a move that paves the way for the creation of a community hub for the area.
A council committee approved the acquiring of the interests of the tenants (Jobs and Business Glasgow) in Garscadden House. Jobs and Business Glasgow have been tenants there since 2010 and had a lease until 2060 and will be paid £285,000 to renounce the lease early, with the council then having full control over the site.
The creation of additional community facilities in Drumchapel has been a priority for the council for some time now, and with this acquisition, the building can be repurposed and developed into a community hub.
The proposed hub - which will be supported through the council’s Community Hubs fund - would feature a relocated local library, the co-location of other services and further community use of the building would be invited and encouraged.
The council has also secured almost £15 million in funding from the UK Government to support the regeneration of Drumchapel Town Centre. The project has several elements, with the development of Drumchapel Town Hall, improvements to Drumchapel Park (including the reopening of the Pavilion), improved accessibility around the town centre and enabling the development of new affordable housing.
Councillor Ruairi Kelly, convener for development and land use at Glasgow City Council, said: “The creation of a community hub in Drumchapel will provide a new focus there, providing a range of services for local people. The wider plans for Drumchapel Town Centre promise to significantly improve the area, and this is the first step to delivering those proposals.”
