Grant success for Aberdeenshire Council’s Sheltered Tenants Forum

Lintel Trust has awarded a £1,000 Small Grant to Aberdeenshire Council’s Sheltered Housing Tenants Forum to enhance digital connectivity and social engagement for sheltered housing tenants across the region.

Around two years ago, 56 sheltered housing schemes across Aberdeenshire were gifted Smart TVs and MiFi devices by a range of businesses and organisations. These devices have played a vital role in improving people’s lives by reducing social isolation, enabling tenants to connect with each other, participate in Tenant Forum meetings, and enjoy interactive activities such as online quizzes and games.

However, while some schemes can connect their Smart TVs to the internet, either through proximity to staff offices or tenants’ private broadband - only around 15 currently have reliable access. Many tenants remain digitally disconnected, limiting the opportunities for wider participation and engagement.

The funding provided by Lintel Trust will help bridge this gap by extending digital access to more sheltered housing schemes. This support will enable more tenants to take part in virtual meetings, engage in online social activities, and even exercise classes like Chair Yoga and Tai Chi. Improving digital connectivity is about more than technology, it’s about helping people stay socially connected, engaged, and active, particularly in rural or isolated areas where attending in-person activities can be challenging.

Improved digital inclusion in a sheltered housing scheme also delivers wider benefits due to the support provided to individuals, digitally confident residents can reduce demand on staff for basic support and enable more efficient communication. At a wider societal level, those with regular online access statistically have increased physical and mental health indicators, contributing to preventative savings, pressure on health and social care services, increasing financial resilience, and enabling participation in the digital economy, ultimately fostering more connected, equitable communities.

Through this initiative, more sheltered housing tenants will have the chance to contribute to forums, share their views, and strengthen their connections with the wider community, all from the comfort and safety of their homes.

Joanne Miller, vice chair of the Sheltered Housing Tenants Forum, said: “We are delighted that Lintel Trust has chosen to support our Tenants Forum through their Small Grants programme. Having funds to purchase SIM cards for our Smart TVs will enrich the lives of many tenants, allowing them to take part in interactive activities, stay connected, and feel part of a wider community. Thank you!”

Amanda Gauld from Lintel Trust added: “Digital inclusion is essential for building strong, connected communities. We’re proud to support the Sheltered Housing Tenants Forum with this grant, helping more tenants access opportunities to socialise, exercise, and have their voices heard. Everyone deserves the chance to feel connected, no matter where they live.”
