First Minister John Swinney has pledged deeper collaboration between housing associations and the Scottish Government to combat the housing emergency, tackle child poverty, and deliver safe, affordable homes for all.

Marking 50 years of the Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA), the First Minister told delegates at its Annual Conference yesterday his plans to tackle the deepening housing crisis and deliver long-term stability for the sector.

His remarks came as SFHA published new independent research from YouGov, revealing that three quarters of Scots believe the housing system is unfair for young people.

First Minister John Swinney also used his address to call on the UK Government to do more to support Scotland’s housing sector in the forthcoming UK Spending Review.

Later today, the Chancellor, Rachel Reeves MP, will set out plans for UK Government spending, where it is expected she will reveal details on multi-year spending commitments for Government departments, including housing.

According to early briefings, the Chancellor will announce nearly £40 billion worth of grants to be spent over 10 years for local authorities, private developers and housing associations. She will also allow social landlords to raise rents by 1 percentage point above inflation for the same period, another key demand made by housing providers.
